How to Search the Coalville Court Docket
Utah Courts Xchange handles public searches for any Coalville District or Justice Court case. Pick District for one group. Felonies, Class A misdemeanors, most general civil and domestic cases, and probate sit there. Pick Justice for the other. That level takes most traffic cases, infractions, ordinance matters, Class B or C misdemeanors, and eligible small claims assigned to Summit County Justice Court. The Coalville name alone does not settle the level.
Search with the strongest key you have. Xchange accepts a case number, a party or company name, case type, court scope, dates, and traffic citation details. Utah case numbers are not unique statewide. Pair one with Summit County or the listed court. Names usually need an exact match unless you use the documented wildcard. A party on an eligible linked case can use MyCase instead. Courthouse terminals and written requests offer other ways in.
- Read the citation, notice, or filing for the actual court name.
- Select District, Justice, or both in Xchange.
- Limit the scope to Summit County or the listed court location.
- Enter the case number, name, citation, case type, or useful date range.
- Confirm the court and filing data before reading Case History.
Coalville Court Docket and County-Seat History
Coalville became the Summit County seat in 1872. Wanship held the county-government role before that. Park City tried to move the seat in 1895 and again in 1902, but Coalville kept it. That fight explains why so many county offices and a landmark courthouse still carry the Coalville name. It does not mean every current Summit court case is filed or heard in that old building.
For the building's own story, the county's courthouse history covers a distinctive piece of the record.
Workers built the native-stone courthouse in 1903 and 1904. Its county-seat role marks a real local milestone. Today, though, case access runs through Xchange, Utah court calendars, and the judiciary's record process.
The Coalville Municipal Court
Coalville runs no separate municipal-court docket page. The city has no public case portal either. The city could always change its setup. Treat that as the current lay of the land rather than a permanent fact. A Coalville resident should follow the instructions printed on the ticket, notice, or filing. Do not assume City Hall keeps the case or operates a court at all.
Summit County Justice Court is the named limited-jurisdiction route in local materials. Its clerk and staff keep that docket. District-level files belong to the Clerk of Court for Utah Third District Court. Juvenile Court staff handle juvenile matters. Those files stay generally nonpublic. Keeping these levels straight prevents mix-ups about judges, docket days, and clerks in Coalville.
Coalville Docket Clerks and County Offices
Several Coalville offices carry similar titles. Their records do not swap. Malena Stevens, the elected Summit County Clerk, works in county administration. Her office lists 60 North Main, P.O. Box 128, Coalville, with phone 435-336-3204. Gregory R. Wolbach serves as Recorder/Surveyor, reachable at 435-336-3238. The Recorder keeps land and property records, not a criminal or civil court chronology.
| Coalville record | Correct custodian |
|---|---|
| County administration record | Summit County Clerk or responsible department |
| Land or recorded property instrument | Summit County Recorder/Surveyor |
| District case filing, order, or history | Utah Third District Court clerk |
| Justice citation or case file | Summit County Justice Court clerk or staff |
| Coalville City government document | Coalville City recorder or responsible city office |
Coalville City Hall is a separate office again. The city lists 10 North Main, P.O. Box 188, Coalville, Utah 84017, phone 435-336-5981, along with city recorder and treasurer contacts. Send any request to the office that created and keeps the item. A county document search cannot replace Xchange. A land-record search will not pull up a court order.
Coalville Court Dates and Settings
The Utah Courts calendar posts near-term District and Justice Court settings across the state. Search for the court and location named on your Coalville record. Then check the listing against Case History. Use MyCase if you are a linked party. The newest court notice helps too. These views can update at different times.
| Date | The scheduled day, subject to a later order or notice. |
|---|---|
| Time | The listed start, which may be a group docket time. |
| Court location | The District or Justice site assigned to the case. |
| Judge | The judge or assigned judicial team shown for the setting. |
| Setting type | The hearing category, not proof that it occurred or resolved the case. |
Summit County Justice Court currently holds ordinary hearings by Webex unless the court says otherwise. Give a valid email and the court sends a direct link. No email? Call 435-615-3800. That instruction applies only when Justice Court is the named court. District and Juvenile matters can carry different notices.
Coalville Courthouse and Modern Docket Access
The historic courthouse is not the modern Xchange portal. CORIS is the system where Utah court staff enter case data. Public information then flows from it into Xchange. District coverage generally reaches back to CORIS adoption, mostly by the end of 1998. Justice Court coverage varies. Older converted cases can hold less detail than recent electronic files.
Myth versus fact: Coalville's county-seat status identifies its government history. It does not turn the historic courthouse or county website into the public state court database.
A public event can appear without any document image. For District Court, public papers electronically filed since July 2010 are generally available that way, subject to classification rules and later limits on some civil documents. A Purchase link means Xchange offers an image for a fee. It does not mean the whole file is public, free, or complete.
Coalville Traffic Tickets
Utah treats most traffic tickets as infractions or Class C misdemeanors. Those cases usually go to Justice Court. Check the ticket first. The court printed there is where the case lives. In Xchange, search by citation number or citation location. Or narrow things with jurisdiction, case type, name, and date filters. Before relying on the history, confirm the result names Summit County and the expected court.
A blank search does not mean dismissal. Entry timing can explain it. Wrong court scope, a citation-location mismatch, or a nonpublic status can too. Call the number on the ticket. Summit County Justice Court also answers at 435-615-3800. The court lists jcsummit@utcourts.gov, an online payment route, and an in-person payment option. For paying or contesting, follow the citation and the court's current instructions.
Utah's Deferred Traffic Prosecution program comes with detailed timing and eligibility requirements. It is not universal. A court traffic case also sits apart from the driver record the Utah Driver License Division keeps. Those are different offices. The county-wide Summit County traffic court records explanation covers both and today's traffic channels.
Wrong Office for Coalville Court Records
Start by naming the document. A deed or property instrument belongs at the Recorder/Surveyor. Council, election, and county administrative records go to the responsible local-government office under GRAMA. Pleadings, orders, and docket history stay inside the Utah Judiciary record process. So do certified case copies, court recordings, and transcripts. The courts are not the county's filing cabinet for everything.
For a court item, gather the details first: court level, Summit County or court location, case number, case type, party role, filing or hearing date, and the exact document. Then use the official Request for Court Record instructions. Or simply call the correct court. The form separates inspection from a copy. It also lets a requester choose plain, certified, or exemplified papers, recordings, and other formats.
Each channel serves a different purpose. Xchange, MyCase, the public calendar, a courthouse terminal, phone contact, and a written request all do different jobs. Mail, fax, email, and drop-box delivery follow the receiving office's current rules. Utah Courts will not fax or email records already available on Xchange. So call first. One quick call can spare you a trip. A Coalville government office may hold no judicial file at all.
Where Coalville Cases End Up
Coalville adds no extra tier to Utah's courts. Most Class B and C misdemeanors, infractions, ordinance cases, traffic matters, and assigned small claims go to Summit County Justice Court. Felonies, Class A misdemeanors, most general civil and domestic actions, and probate belong to Utah Third District Court. Juvenile matters have their own court. They generally sit outside public Xchange.
Docket flow: Coalville matter › Summit County Justice Court or Utah Third District Court › District or Utah appellate review as applicable.
A Justice Court appeal begins in the issuing court. The notice gets filed there. The case then moves to District Court for a trial de novo, meaning a new trial at that level. Utah's Court of Appeals is not the next stop. Federal civil and criminal cases use the District of Utah and PACER. Bankruptcy goes to the federal Bankruptcy Court system.
Coalville Small-Claims Docket Check
Check one conflict before filing a Coalville small-claims case. The Summit County Justice Court page says the court handles claims of $15,000 or less. Current statewide small-claims and 2026 fee materials point to a $20,000 maximum. Those figures disagree. Neither number should be treated as a universal rule for all filing dates. Use the current Utah Courts small-claims page instead. Confirm the correct venue with the issuing court. State guidance generally points to a city or town justice court when one exists. Then it points to county Justice Court, and otherwise to District Court. Coalville runs no separate municipal docket. So verify the present route rather than treating Coalville City Hall as the filing counter.
Public Access to Coalville Court Records
Coalville court record access rests on Utah judiciary rules. UCJA Rule 4-202.02 classifies court records. Rule 4-202.03 then governs who may reach public, private, protected, sealed, and expunged material. Anyone may generally inspect a public record, subject to lawful redaction, format limits, and fees, and no personal connection is normally needed for a public docket.
Key rules:
UCJA Rule 4-202.02 places Utah court records into access classes.
UCJA Rule 4-202.03 sets access rights for each class.
UCJA Rule 4-202.08 addresses court-record fees, waivers, and access charges.
Restricted matters stay restricted. Juvenile delinquency, child-welfare, adoption, civil mental-health, and similar cases never turn public through a Coalville name search. Some civil histories stay visible. Their attachments can still be private. Sealed and expunged matters carry their own limits. A requester with a legal right to nonpublic material can state that basis in the court form's own section and attach proof.
Coalville Court Docket Local Scale
The official 2020 Census incorporated-place table counted 1,486 Coalville residents. That placed Coalville fifth among the five Summit County cities chosen for local docket pages. The count gives civic scale, not caseload. The courts publish no Coalville-only filing total.
These figures sketch Coalville's civic identity. They cannot count city-related cases, tie a county filing to a resident, or settle jurisdiction. Court name and case fields remain the reliable guides.
